The Author’s Reasons For His Book | |
WHY did I write this book? Because—Firstly, as my published works of the past will show, I take a deep and growing interest in my native land—its people, its developments and its great movements. And the Revival of 1904-5 appeared to me, as it did to others, a momentous movement, having a distinct message for the churches and the age, both social and religious. Secondly, I had already read pamphlets, articles and books dealing with this Revival, each author taking his own particular view-point. Inasmuch, however, as they all seem to avoid the critical, I felt disposed to attempt it. Thirdly, in the month of June, 1908, I accidentally came in contact, at Swansea, with a brother-minister of repute and many years’ service in the Principality. After a thorough exchange of views upon the Revival—its tone, results and misleading interpretations, I made up my mind to write this critical essay, and the minister in question has indirectly given me every encouragement. Fourthly, I believe that a work of this description will place the Revival in a new, though a true, light—a work that will fairly and safely help its present and future effect and interpretation.
